Moving
I've been a bit unsure of what to do with this blog lately.
I have decided I will continue to use this site for professional announcements. However, for a more stream-of-consciousness approach, I will primarily use kairosvoice.livejournal.com

You are cordially invited to attend the University of Minnesota Opera Theatre's production of
Le nozze di Figaro Thursday, November 9th - Saturday, November 11th @ 7:30PM Sunday, November 12th @ 1:30PM Ted Mann Concert Hall, Minneapolis
The opera is double cast. I will be performing the role of the womanizing power-monger, Count Almaviva, on Friday, November 10th and Sunday, November 12th.
This favorite opera will be presented with an unusual twist. The costumes, sets, and staging have been inspired by Kabuki theatre.
Performances are sung in Italian with English surtitles, and pre-opera lobby discussions with director, David Walsh, begin 45 minutes before each performance.
General Admission Tickets are $18, and tickets for full-time U of M students are $10. Call 612/624-2345 for tickets.
Educators may be interested in the dress rehearsal on Wednesday, November 8th at 7:00PM; this rehearsal is open to school groups and is free. Additionally, the Minnesota Opera Guild has provided funds in the past for buses for school groups. Contact the Opera Theatre office at 612-624-6596 for more information or e-mail walsh057 ATumn DOTedu
I will be posting information about the opera periodically on Classically Savvy throughout the upcoming weeks. The plot of this opera is EXTREMELY confusing, so some prior knowledge of the work will be of immense help to all.
If you see the show, please make a point to come backstage and say hello afterwards! The doors off the main level box seats on the Right hand side of the auditorium lead backstage.
Thank you for supporting me and my colleagues! See you at the opera :-)

A New Project My newest blog! My family and non-musical friends hate going to performances with me, because I always ask "What did you think?" afterwards. They do their best to try to answer, but since music is an abstract art form, it takes many, MANY words to describe a fraction of the experience. They also realize that I listen to music differently than they do, and that they didn't catch everything I did.
I started Classically Savvy (http://lyricbaritone.wordpress.com) so that I can help readers gain a deeper understanding of music, and a better vocabulary with which to discuss it.
Expect new posts every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. And ask LOTS of questions! As my career starts to grow in ever more unusual directions, I want to make sure people who see me perform understand not only what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, but what's behind it historically and culturally, and why it's important.
Or not important. But you need information to make that decision. And that's why I started the blog -- so you can decide for yourself.

La-la-la-Lisa! Daltirus as Aida with Gregg Baker in Philly.
Tosca final dress rehearsal is this morning. J'adore the B-cast Tosca Lisa Daltirus who will be singing today.
It's not often I get all misty over performers, because mostly they're overhyped and have lost their spark somewhere along the line. But this Tosca -- oh my! She's gorgeuse! There's something about a tall black woman who owns her space that's very powerful and sexy. She's got style and flair. Her acting is genuine and compelling; she truly owns the role, and it's clear that she is Tosca. One blogger wrote "even with her back turned you can see what she is feeling through her body language. In other words, a complete package." Oh, and all that "technical" stuff, like legato line, support, diction, and musicality are all perfect, housed in an amazingly ample, rich, and velvety "Leontyne Price like" voice. And she's kind and gracious offstage; the only diva-ness she exhibits are her clothes, and honey, with a body like that, work it! IMHO, Lisa Daltirus is the embodiment of what an opera singer should be -- a good colleague with great acting and singing abilities.
Is it wrong of me to like the B-cast more than the A-cast?
